Greyhounds As Pets (GAP) is a registered charity which finds pet homes for greyhounds which are no longer able to race.

Greyhounds are affectionate, gentle and intelligent dogs. Each year many retire from racing and hope to start a new life as a pet. Greyhounds usually make this transition with ease and quickly become devoted companions. As our 600 plus owners agree - a greyhound makes a very special addition to the family.

Greyhounds are ideal pets for most dog lovers. All they need is a walk each day but nothing excessive - as a sprint dog they are actually very lazy, a warm comfortable bed for their favourite past time – snoozing, and someone to love. Most enjoy the company of other dogs and many will share their bed with the family cat too!

GAP rehomes greyhounds nationally through two kennel bases – one in Sanson, Manawatu, and the other in Amberley near Christchurch. Our Greyhounds are carefully assessed and then matched with their new owners – we act a bit like a dating agency putting hounds and humans together. Our Greyhounds visit our vet for a health check, neutering and micro-chipping. We also ensure that their vaccinations and council registrations are up to date.

GAP is also a community of greyhound lovers. Our owners get together to have fun watching their hounds run together and also help at events to find more homes for greyhounds coming out of racing.
