THE RABBIT COUNCIL OF NEW ZEALAND (Inc)
(Affiliated to The British Rabbit Council)
The legalization of domestic rabbits for commercial purposes in 1980 brought about the establishment of the Rabbit Council of New Zealand as the countrys governing body of rabbits. Only six breeds were initially allowed including Angora, Flemish Giant, Californian, NZ White, Chinchilla and Rex.
Following the legalisation of further breeds, rabbits continued to grow in popularity to both commercialists and the hobbyists alike. In more recent years, the commercial market has declined although more recently there is renewed interest, but mainly today now lies with exhibition of the some 27 breeds of rabbits that are now recognised.
With 12 affiliated rabbit clubs and some 100 members nationwide, the Rabbit Council of New Zealand has a range of roles and responsibilities to its members.
The Rabbit council of New Zealand sets the Standards of Perfection for which rabbits are judged against; hosts judging schools across the country; runs a national registration scheme where members can purchase rings and tattoo numbers; a breeder registration scheme; a championship showing scheme; a role of education to the public wherever possible.
The Rabbit Council of New Zealand is committed to building an information resource for new and existing members. We have provided a forum for discussion on rabbit happenings, a chat room, and a library of publications and a list of links.
